A Combined Pedal for Brake and Accelerator
نویسنده
چکیده
The present paper deals with design, construction and working of Accelerator and Brake operated by one pedal, which may be a technique for reducing road accidents. The main objective of this innovation is to eliminate the operator’s risk of pressing the wrong pedal at the time of emergency as well as reduction in the driver’s reaction time to switch from accelerator to brakes or vice versa. This new mechanism is designed in such a way that it can be used in any type of automotive vehicle. The mechanism used for combined brake and accelerator is simple and can be adopted conveniently. At the present time automobiles are equipped with independent pedal controls for operating the accelerator and brake, these pedals being operated by right foot, and since the two functions are opposed and incompatible it is necessary to leave one pedal free in order to operate the other. It can therefore be supposed that some drivers have difficulty in removing their foot from the accelerator pedal and transferring it to the brake pedal quickly in emergency situations. To solve this problem, a new brake pedal and accelerator system is designed. The detailed design of combined pedal mechanism is modelled using CATIA V5 R20. Then a prototype has been prepared which confirms the required mechanism and finally tested for its working. Therefore, it gives an optimized design for new combined pedal mechanism. Hopefully this project will help everyone to understand how implemented mechanism works more efficiently, which can help to reduce the accident that may happen in each day.

A Combined Brake-accelerator Pedal and Its Evaluation
Over the years designers have developed various combined brake-accelerator pedals in an effort to eliminate the operator’s risk of pressing the wrong pedal as well as to reduce his or her reaction time in braking. The goal of this study was to highlight problems that drivers may face when they switch between pedal systems. Eighteen male and female drivers varying in age participated in the stud...

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of pedal errors by younger and older drivers that relate to sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) accidents. Background: SUA during an accident is a serious issue that causes numerous critical injuries and deaths every year. Previous studies have indicated that the major factor in these accidents is pedal error; howeve...
متن کاملEffect of Flashing Brake Lights on Drivers\' Brake Reaction Time and Release Gas Pedal Time
Objective: It is believed that drivers play a crucial role in accidents. Paying attention to brake lights, a driver may find out about danger and react. Rear-end collision accidents refer to the part of the accidents due to driver inattention or slow reaction. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dynamic flashing brake lights (7 Hz) on drivers' brake reaction time using the driv...
متن کاملAdaptive Fuzzy Control for Driver Assistance in Car-Following
An adaptive fuzzy logic controller is described which assists the driver in vehicle speed and distance control by offering a driving strategy via an active accelerator and brake pedal. In order to be accepted by the driver, the behavior of the system called ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) has to meet the expectations of the human driver to a certain degree. The Fuzzy-ACC provides separate control...

In two experiments, we used an automatic car simulator to examine the steering control, speed regulation and response to hazards of young adults with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and limited driving experience. In Experiment 1 participants either used the accelerator pedal to regulate their speed, or used the brake pedal when they needed to slow down from a pre-set speed. In Experi...
